Description / Persea Holiday Avocado
Holiday Avocado Tree is a dwarf cultivar that is valued not only for fruit production but also for ornamental purposes and can fit beautifully into an edible landscape. From late spring to early fall, the tree blooms in abundant, showy clusters of greenish white blossoms, followed in midsummer to mid-fall by very large—18- to 24-ounce—fruit with a medium-thick green rind and an average-sized seed. The buttery flesh is smooth and creamy and has a great flavor.
Holiday Avocado Tree, a Guatemalan A-type, is a tropical, multistemmed, broadleaf evergreen that grows vigorously and has a compact, spreading, umbrella habit of glossy, dark green leaves that skirt the ground. The tree makes an excellent accent or specimen and can be trained as an espalier. It is also a good container plant and can be grown indoors as an ornamental houseplant. But it will need to be moved outdoors seasonally to produce fruit.
Grown in the garden, Holiday Avocado Tree can grow to between 12 to 16 feet tall and 10 feet wide at full maturity—compact for an avocado—though container growth is more likely to be smaller and vary with pot size. Although a container grown tree will not reach its full growth potential, it will still flower and set full-sized fruits.
Holiday Avocado Tree grows best in sunny locations with rich, loose, evenly moist, normal to loamy, well-draining soil. The plants are heat and humidity tolerant and pest resistant. Applying fertilizer just before flower bud break is critical for good avocado production. If container grown, the plant should be brought inside at the first sign of frost and placed in a location with plenty of bright sunshine. The tree is self-pollinating and will bear fruit without any pollen from other varieties, but the fruit crop will be better if two trees, an A-type and a B-type, are planted together or if the tree is planted with pollinator-attracting plants.
Plant height is 18-36" when shipped.
